Washington D.C. (Special Correspondent)

The rise of fake news and malicious posts on social media is a matter of grave concern, particularly when such content targets respected individuals and institutions. The recent case involving journalist Swaran Singh Tehna, who has been maliciously targeted with false and misleading information online, is deeply disturbing and unacceptable.
Such acts are not only a personal attack on an individual committed to journalistic integrity but also an assault on the freedom of the press and democratic values. Misinformation campaigns erode public trust, create social unrest, and damage the reputation of Punjab and our nation on a global stage.
strongly urge the Cyber Cell of Punjab and the Government of India to take swift, transparent, and stringent action against those spreading fake news, especially when it targets responsible voices like Mr. Tehna. There must be a clear message that defamation, character assassination, and the misuse of digital platforms will not be tolerated.
It is imperative that:
1. An immediate inquiry be launched to identify and hold accountable those responsible for spreading false content about Swaran Singh Tehna.
2. The DGP of Punjab Police ensures that the cyber cell remains proactive and vigilant against such malicious digital activity.
3. A robust mechanism be developed for the protection of journalists, public figures, and the general public from digital harassment and defamation.
4. Public awareness campaigns be initiated to educate citizens about the consequences of spreading or believing in unverified and fake information.
3. Freedom of speech must be protected—but that freedom does not extend to lies, defamation, and coordinated smear campaigns.
As Ambassador for Peace (USA), I stand in solidarity with Mr. Swaran Singh Tehna and all journalists who strive to uphold truth in the face of adversity. We must act collectively and decisively to uphold justice, dignity, and the reputation of Punjab and India in the digital era.
