The Virginia Beach Convention Center transformed into a vibrant mosaic of colors, sounds, and flavors as thousands gathered for the 28th annual India Fest, one of the largest Indian community celebrations in the region. With the spirit of unity echoing through every corner, the event was hailed as a cultural confluence—“where all rivers merge”—bringing together people from diverse backgrounds to honor the richness of Indian heritage.
A Festive Fusion of Tradition and Togetherness
From the moment the doors opened, attendees were immersed in a sensory celebration of India’s timeless traditions. The aroma of freshly prepared Indian delicacies filled the air as food stalls remained bustling throughout the day, offering everything from spicy chaats to sweet jalebis. With the holiday season approaching, guests eagerly browsed stalls adorned with glittering costume jewelry and vibrant ethnic wear—selecting gifts for loved ones and treasures for themselves.
A Sacred Start
The festivities began with a warm welcome from the cultural chair and co-chair, followed by a soulful Ganesh Stuti performed by Daivi Master—an invocation to Lord Ganesha, the Hindu deity of new beginnings. Children then paraded proudly with Indian and American flags, symbolizing the harmony between cultures.
Dance, Dignitaries, and Diya Lighting
The stage came alive with Divine Dancers presenting “Bharat,” a mesmerizing performance that captured the essence of Indian classical dance through expressive movements and storytelling. The ceremonial lighting of the Diya—led by the fest chairperson and Mr. Jagmohan Ji from the Indian Embassy’s Community Affairs—marked the official opening, accompanied by the national anthems of India and the United States. Esteemed guests included Congresswoman Jen Kagan, the Mayor of Norfolk, state delegates, and a special message from Governor Glenn Youngkin, read by his representative. Their presence underscored the event’s significance as a bridge between communities and cultures.
Cultural Showcases and Soulful Rhythms
Throughout the day, attendees were treated to a kaleidoscope of performances representing various Indian states, each adorned in traditional attire. Yoga demonstrations offered moments of serenity amid the excitement, while the infectious energy of Punjabi music and Bhangra stole the spotlight. The crowd—American and Indian alike—couldn’t resist joining in, their feet moving in joyful abandon.
Youth Spotlight: Seher Saini’s Inspiring Mission
Among the many highlights was a heartfelt initiative by Hickory High School 10th grader Ms. Seher Saini, whose stall under the banner of the Student Organ Donor Association drew admiration and support. Her dedication to raising awareness and promoting life-saving donations resonated deeply with festivalgoers.
Star Power: Nushrratt Bharuccha Lights Up the Stage
The excitement peaked when Bollywood star Nushrratt Bharuccha graced the stage. Her charismatic presence and energetic performance on Punjabi tracks from her films had the audience dancing alongside her, creating unforgettable memories.
A Celebration of Unity and Heritage
The 28th India Fest was more than an event—it was a living tribute to the spirit of community, the beauty of diversity, and the enduring legacy of Indian culture. As the Diya flickered and music echoed into the evening, Virginia Beach stood illuminated by the light of shared joy and cultural pride.
